Shane Hurley from Welwyn Garden City has recently qualified as a level 2 gym instructor through the multi-award winning Instructability Programme. Shane’s goal is to prove that there should be no barriers due to disability for people using the gym and is hoping to forge a career in the fitness industry.

Shane has been an amputee from six months old after his mother came in contact with German measles during pregnancy. He had always been active and played cricket, football, but things became severe making him wheelchair bound and he had to go through surgery.

He was suggested to attend the Instructability Programme in YMCA Health club. Beating all odds he is a qualified Level 2 gym Instructor now and completing his work placement in YMCA gym.

From an isolated individual feeling cut off from rest of the world, he has evolved as a stronger confident person and says his goal is to prove there should be no barriers because of disability for people using the gym and is hoping to forge a career in the fitness industry.

"The gym can be a place for everyone and I will work my hardest to break down every boundaries.

Exercise is a massive part of my life now and part of my everyday routine. If I can help one disabled person who has been in a similar situation as I was in, it will be worth all the hard work."

Shane has been featured in Watford Observer for his outstanding courage and passion.
