Our 6 Children’s Centres work within local communities across Hertfordshire and Central Bedfordshire. As well as providing parents with the opportunities to attend sessions and activities they may not otherwise have had access to, the centres offer outreach to those families needing a bit of extra support. Mum Emma shares her story.
“My health visitor told me about the YMCA Children’s Centre. At first I was a bit unsure as I didn’t know anyone from the area, but I was put in touch with the YMCA Outreach Worker who came round to our house to tell me all about the facilities.
When I first walked through the doors with my 4-month-old little bundle of joy, I was like a rabbit in the headlights, feeling scared and overwhelmed with motherhood. But this all changed thanks to the lovely staff and other mummies that I have met.
Connecting with the Children’s Centre has proved to be one of the best decisions I have ever made. I myself have grown in confidence as a woman and a mother. Charlie has come on in leaps and bounds. He loves coming to the groups and he has developed great social skills from mixing with the other children. All the staff are approachable and always on hand to answer any questions I may have.
I have attended lots of courses here and have learnt so much in a short space of time. I have even read a story to everyone at one of the groups, something I wouldn’t have dreamt of doing in the past.
I really would urge any mummies that are feeling alone or isolated to come to the Children’s Centre. At first I did it for Charlie, but now I have made some true long-term friendships and come for myself too. I have a lot to thank YMCA for.”
