Signpost - Helping young people - One to one counselling - One YMCA

Our main service is one-to-one counselling across Hertfordshire.

Funded Counselling Service

We have a number of funded spaces for 10-18 year olds living in Hertfordshire.

  • Early Intervention and Prevention Project for those living in Hertfordshire. A maximum of 12 sessions of counselling will be available for 10-18 year-olds who have not previously had support.
Self-funded Counselling Service

Due to the limited number of funded spaces, there are some self-funded places available throughout the year for children, young people and adults.

Parental consent is normally required for counselling young people aged 10-14.

We are a confidential service, and your sessions remain private. The only time we will break confidentiality and share with a parent/carer or other professional is where we feel you or someone else is at risk or where we are legally obliged to do so.

These self-funded sessions are available for 10-25 year olds across Hertfordshire.

Many of the young people that Signpost have supported, report experiencing:

Problems with relationships in the home and at school.
Low self-esteem.
Depression and anxiety.
Identity issues to do with gender, ethnicity or sexuality.
Coping with the impact of abuse, both physical and emotional.
Bullying.
Bereavement.
Feelings of stress and emotional overwhelm.
School Avoidance
Neurodiversity
Counselling provides a safe space for you to process feelings and experiences in which the counsellor will help facilitate your journey.

Counselling allows you to reflect on your experiences, identify patterns of behaviour or explore coping strategies to help you navigate everyday life.

Counselling usually focuses on the internal or emotional difficulties people face, such as:

  • The internal causes of stress and anxiety
  • Depression and low moods
  • Addiction
  • Relationships causing emotional turmoil
  • Living with the emotional impact of abuse and trauma
  • Understanding your identity, including confusion about race, gender or sexuality
  • Coping with bereavement
  • Living with a disability or disorder, including ADHD
  • Self esteem
  • Building confidence

Currently we offer face to face counselling in our Watford site with the option for outreach in your local education setting.

We also offer telephone and video appointments to young people who work, live or study in our catchment area.

To request counselling, you can fill in a ‘Request counselling’ form below. Once this is received, someone from our admin team will contact you.  If you require any further information or need help to complete the form, please contact us on 01923 239495.
