As part of our mission to support people in mind, body and spirit, the Hertfordshire Family Centre Service brings together children’s centres, health visiting and school nursing to provide a complete service for children, young people and their families from pregnancy to aged 19. Commissioned by Hertfordshire County Council, we have responsibility for the area’s Family Support service.
What do we do?
We support young children and families by reducing inequalities in three core areas:
- Child development and school readiness
- Parenting aspiration and parenting skills
- Child and family health and life chances

How do we do it?
Our Family Centres offer a space where families can enjoy services like Stay and Play or Rhyme Time, access breastfeeding and health services as well as specialised support from sites in Broxbourne, Welwyn, Hatfield, and East Herts.
What do our volunteers do?
Our volunteers are a core part of our friendly, welcoming team. Volunteers bring their experience of the joys and challenges of family life to support others and help them to thrive. As a volunteer, you’ll receive full training, and you’ll always have the support of a supervisor.
Current roles
Gardener
Looking for green-fingered people who like being outdoors and would like to support the local community. We are looking for friendly individuals or groups of people to maintain & uphold the Family Centres gardens, so that they are safe & enjoyable for all to use. We have a variety of gardens across the service, that all offer something different from court yard spaces, play areas and large gardens and vegetable patches.

The Emerging Needs Volunteer plays a key role in setting up and supporting the Emerging Needs and perinatal workers in the work we do with families and children
We are looking for friendly individuals who are interested in early years. To welcome families and support the engagement of both parent and child with all the activities we provide, this includes role modelling child led play, characteristics of effective learning and positive feedback and praise in group sessions.

The Home learning Resource Volunteer plays a key role in creating resource packs to support the work with families in the local community.
We are looking for well organised, creative people to work closely with Leads and Administrators to prepare home learning resource packs that are then delivered to families in the community who are eligible for 2 year funding. The role involves some IT skills, printing resources, cutting, laminating and preparing the resource packs. This role works best in the school holidays allowing adequate time to plan and prepare the resources for the term ahead.

Early Start Activity Volunteer
The Early Start Activity Volunteer plays a key role in supporting the Early Start Team in their work with parents, carers, families and Children (under 11years) We are looking for friendly, hands on individuals who are interested in early years. To welcome families and support the engagement of both parent and child with all the activities we provide in the sessions, promoting children’s development and positive feedback and praise in indoor and outdoor group activities.

This is a key role in the work we do in partnership with the Public Health Nursing Service. We are looking for friendly individuals to welcome families and to support with all the required tasks to enable the smooth running Baby and Toddler Health Clinics.

This key role supports the service in providing these sessions for parents with qualified members of staff providing a relaxed and friendly environment for families to seek advice and support with breast feeding and infant feeding. Hertfordshire Family Centres are Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI) accredited through UNICEF.
