Trauma is something that canย affectย everyone, it is an emotional response to a terrible eventย suchย as aย car accident, abuse,ย persistent bullyingย or a natural disaster. It can also happen at any age and often causes long lasting harm.ย Everyone reacts to trauma differently so you might notice the effectsย very shortly after the eventย or months/years later.ย How you are affected by a traumatic event can depend on other factors,ย for example:
- If you have had previous experiences of trauma
- What else is going on in your life at the time
- If the event is causedย by someone close to you
- You’reย age
- If youย receivedย any help or support
Theย commonย effects/warning signs of trauma are:
- Flashbacks of the traumatic event orย feelings
- Reoccurring panic attacks
- Dissociation
- Difficulty with sleeping
- Nightmares on a regularย basics
- Constantlyย feeling on edge and looking out for danger
- Feeling Anxiousย a lot of the time
- Low self-esteem
- Suicidal feelings

Trauma can last a very long time, but you can recover from it with the right help. If you think you are struggling with traumaย or stressย speak to your youthย worker, wellbeing worker, local GP, or a counsellor.
There are many different forms of stressย and traumaticย related conditions,ย the most commonlyย known is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
