Where One YMCAโ€™s โ€˜Sparkโ€™ beganโ€ฆ

In Autumn 2021, 20 people from across One YMCA came together to learn a song written especially for One YMCA, have some fun, and record the next Christmas Number One!

We were so excited to announce the launch of our debut single, โ€˜Sparkโ€™. Please click on the image above to watch, or keep reading to hear more of the story.ย  We hope you enjoy, and please do share it with your friends ๐Ÿ˜Š

It all started with a connection between Nicola (One YMCA), and her son Teddyโ€™s music teacher Gwen. Gwen is also a local singer-songwriter who releases and performs under the artist name โ€˜Gwen and the Good Thingโ€™. She was so inspired by the work at One YMCA that she wrote the song โ€˜Sparkโ€™, which encapsulates some of the heart of our charity. The lyrical themes of โ€˜Sparkโ€™ revolve around seeing and valuing the good in others, recognising their own individual beauty and talent, and helping each other to overcome adversity.

The idea of a choir was born, and 20 people from across One YMCA came together to bring the song to life.ย  Staff and volunteers from our Housing, Gym, Family Support, Youth & ECP teams came together with residents from our Hostels. Young people from Herts and Bucks came together for an evening sing song around a bonfire. And Teddy, wearing his โ€˜Hopeโ€™ T-shirt, stole the show in the final performance ๐Ÿ˜Š

We are so proud of what we have accomplished together, and hope you enjoy it. We would love more people to be inspired by the message, so please do share it with friends and help us reach Christmas Number One! We are also linking the single to our Christmas Hope Appealย for anyone who would like to make a donation. Every penny helps us to continue to reach out and help reignite the fading sparks we see in our communities.
