“I was literally homeless for a period of time, but I got a meeting here, and I was moved in 20 minutes later!”
“Dan would regularly knock on my door to invite me to join Project Resilience sessions but he was never pushy and it became a routine. In the end all I needed was a pair of trainers. I started doing circuits and because it was a small group I didn’t feel so anxious. I started making friends because I was coming out of my room and joined them in playing badminton. I was chatting with Dan, saying that I
would volunteer to run sessions if I could and he said ‘Why don’t you then?’ I had previously done a sports qualification and although that’s lapsed, Dan is offering opportunities, you don’t have to wait until you leave somewhere like this to start living your life. Although I’ve emotionally spiralled at times, One YMCA have given me the space to do that whilst providing a safety net. Trusting my process and treating me like a person. I managed to get through some really awful things and I wouldn’t have been able to do that without the support of the staff here.”
