In 2026, One YMCA proudly celebrates 140 years of being here for generations.
Founded in 1886 as Watford and District YMCA, we began by offering prayer and spiritual guidance to the young men of Watford. As communities have grown and changed, so have we. From those early days to becoming the largest YMCA in England and Wales, our purpose has remained constant: to be here when we are needed most.
For generations, we have adapted to the needs of the time. When housing is scarce or unaffordable, we provide a safe place to stay. When families face crisis, we offer support. As challenges emerge including domestic abuse and sexual violence, poor mental health and financial hardship; we have evolved our services to address them. Because being here for generations means never standing still.
Today,
- We are here for communities: providing safe spaces and specialist support to enable people to belong, contribute and thrive.
- We are here for young people: championing potential, offering opportunity and standing alongside them as they shape their futures.
