“When I joined One YMCA’s St. Albans Community Gym in 2018 I had been dealing with years of under-eating and over-exercising. After taking a complete break from sport I wanted to get back to exercising in a healthy and balanced way, and I couldn’t have had a better or more supportive environment to do just that than at YMCA.

I started by attending metafit twice a week – and I still wouldn’t miss this class for the world! Working out with other people in a short, fun, but extremely intense class made me realise that sport is about so much more than burning calories. The gym became as much about socialising and meeting new people as it was about exercise.

I now go to the gym five times a week, as well as going to metafit during the weekend. I love my daily chats with the staff – soon to be colleagues – and friends I have made. We start every morning by “setting the world to rights”over a kettlebell or two and it really feels like I am a part of a community where everyone knows and cares about everyone else. Whether it is asking for fitness advice, to change the radio station or simply checking how everyone’s weekend was, there’s always a friendly face at YMCA.

I am about to make the transition from gym member to staff member and I couldn’t be happier to join the team behind the desk. I hope to bring the same cheery smile and welcoming conversation to the next set of members, and you’ll still be able to find me at the front of metafit at the weekend!”
